GATE RUN-UP ESTIMATE – Larry Wellman
This is an update on an original post from May 1994. Since that
time I have updated my Energy Program, collected more data on gate run-up
for various tracks. So far the only tracks to publish the run-up
distance are the CA. tracks.
The following post includes information on how to adjust race times
when the gate run-up distance varies for race distances.
For example at Laurel (old track not the current configuration)
races for 51/2, 6, 61/2, 7 and 71/2 are carded
on the main track. I do not have the exact distances, however I
have hand timed races both in person and video replay. I have recorded
times of 1.6 seconds for 61/2, 1.20 for 7f, 2.45-2.73 at 11/16.
Run-up times vary for class, mixture of horse within the race and the
track resistance.
The model used for the following table represents about a $14,500
claiming horse with a BSF of 80. The times are given in seconds and
the distance from the gate to the first timing pole. The baseline sprint
model for no run-up is: 24.50, 48.15, 73.40. With a run-up of 60 ft
the times become: 22.85, 46.55, 71.85. The tables are referenced to
the zero gate distance. The route model is a variation of the sprint
model to represent a sprinter stretching out to a route. Race class
is about $14,500, BSF-80. The
baseline no run-up: 25.60, 49.10, 74.50, 101.00, 114.55, 128.30.
For gate at 60ft: 23.50, 47.15, 72.55, 99.10, 112.70, 126.50.
The times in this table are about .10-.20 seconds lower than my
original posting in 1994. I have included more run-up distances and
the run-up times. The computer run were made with a delta time of 1/20
second.
The data represents the same level of jockey urging at the sprint and
a different level for the route.
This information should be used as a guide.
